An epic adventure/romance in the best tradition of the movies, this critically acclaimed film is the story of Li, known throughout QING China for his adventurous life, who now wishes to retire from a warrior’s life. He decides to give his powerful, ancient sword as a gift to an old friend, but it is stolen by a mysterious master of the martial arts. Li sets out to uncover the thief and return the sword to its rightful owner, accompanied by Shu Lien, the unacknowledged love of his life.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is set in a China where miracles are credible and spirits and gods present in the world. It was not unbelievable that zen warriors floated through the air, skimmed the water and battled in trees and on rooftops. According to director Ang Lee, the incredibly graceful and acrobatic stunts were done primarily by the actors themselves, with the aid of wire harnesses, all traces of which were removed during editing.
